Design Camp: Waterpark Architecture (8-11)

Next dates

In this full-day workshop, participants will explore how waterparks are designed and how these leisure spaces can offer fun, creative experiences for a wide range of people. Through discussion, drawing, collage, and scale model making, each participant will create a unique vision of a waterpark.

The session begins with a visit to Splash! A Century of Swimming and Style. Inspired by the exhibition, children will share ideas and reflect on personal experiences of waterparks and pools, exploring what matters most about these environments.
Designer and artist Madeleine Famurewa will introduce her practice, followed by an exploration of how waterparks are represented in film, television, video games, and social media. Participants will then imagine past or future waterparks and think about who might use them. Through large-scale drawings, collage, and projection, stories and characters will be developed to inhabit these imaginative spaces, with a focus on user-centred design.

The afternoon will focus on turning ideas into reality. Participants will build scale models using simple household materials and waste. Designs will then be combined to form a shared superpark, with discussions around how light and sound can shape the atmosphere of the final space. By the end of the workshop, each participant will have created a set of design sketches and a working model of a new waterpark concept.

Learning outcomes include:

  • Understanding waterparks as people-focused spaces
  • Introduction to user-centred design principles
  • Storytelling through architecture
  • Sketching and exploratory drawing
  • Working to scale
  • Quick modelling and prototyping
