Design Camp: Waterpark Architecture (11-14)

Next dates

In this full-day workshop, young people will explore how waterparks are designed and how these environments can be shaped into fun, inclusive spaces for enjoyment and play.

The day begins with a visit to Splash! A Century of Swimming and Style. Inspired by the exhibition, participants will reflect on personal experiences of waterparks and pools and discuss what makes these places meaningful. Designer and artist Madeleine Famurewa will introduce her creative practice, followed by a group exploration of how waterparks appear in film, television, video games, and social media. Participants will imagine waterparks of the future—or the past—and think about who might use them. Through large-scale collages and drawings with projections, they will develop stories and characters that interact with these imagined spaces, considering how design can respond to different users.

The workshop continues with model-making using everyday materials and waste. Participants will bring individual designs together to explore the concept of a shared superpark, experimenting with ideas for light and sound to enhance the overall atmosphere.
By the end of the session, each participant will have a set of sketches and a working model of a utopian waterpark concept.

Learning outcomes include:

  • Understanding waterparks as people-focused spaces
  • Principles of user-centred design
  • Basics of architectural storytelling
  • Sketching and exploratory drawing
  • Working to scale
  • Quick modelling and prototyping
