Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace
Next dates
One of London’s most iconic traditions, the Changing of the Guard is a brilliant experience for visitors of all ages. This historic ceremony marks the formal handover of responsibility for protecting Buckingham Palace, as one group of soldiers takes over duty from another.
Changing of the Guard Schedule
The full Changing of the Guard ceremony at Buckingham Palace normally takes place on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 11:00.
On Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, a less formal Captain’s Inspection usually takes place at 15:00.
On Sundays, the Sunday Parade takes place at 11:00. Please note that it is currently being held at 10:00 instead of 11:00.
During the Sunday Parade, The King’s Guard is inspected on the forecourt of Buckingham Palace. The Colour is then trooped through the ranks while the National Anthem is played, before being marched to St James's Palace. The Guard escorts the Colour to the Guardroom at St James’s Palace, where it is formally lodged.
What to Expect
Expect precision marching, traditional red tunics, bearskin hats and military bands playing ceremonial music. It is a wonderful opportunity to witness British pageantry up close and soak up the atmosphere in one of London’s most famous settings.
As timings can occasionally change due to weather or official events, it is always worth checking ahead before you travel.
